The Sridevi family came from Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu. Her father, Ayyapan, was a lawyer, and her mother was Rajeswari. She had a sister, Latha, who later managed her career, and step-brothers, Anand and Satish. She entered films as a child, and her earnings supported the family from a young age.

Sridevi began acting at the age of four with the Tamil film Thunaivan (1967) and worked steadily as a child artist across South Indian cinema, developing a natural screen presence and dancing skill long before she became a leading lady.
