Mithun Chakraborty

Mithun Chakraborty, born Gouranga Chakraborty on 16 June 1950, is an Indian actor, producer and former politician who has worked across Hindi, Bengali and other regional film industries. He won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his debut film, Mrinal Sen's Mrigayaa (1976), and became an international phenomenon with Disco Dancer (1982), which drew huge audiences in the Soviet Union and China. A three-time National Film Award winner, he later moved into acclaimed character roles in films such as Agneepath, Guru, Golmaal 3, Oh My God! (2012) and The Kashmir Files. He conceived the reality show Dance India Dance, served as a Rajya Sabha member from 2014 to 2016, and joined the BJP in 2021. He received the Padma Bhushan in 2024 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India's highest film honour.

Mithun Chakraborty was born on 16 June 1950 into a Bengali family with roots in Barisal (now in Bangladesh), and grew up in Kolkata. He studied chemistry at Scottish Church College, Kolkata, before training as an actor at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. Before entering cinema he was, for a time, associated with the Naxalite movement in Bengal.

His parents were Basantakumar and Shanti Rani Chakraborty. He is married to former actress Yogeeta Bali, whom he wed in 1979. The couple have three sons — Mahaakshay (Mimoh), Ushmey and Namashi — and an adopted daughter, Dishani. Mahaakshay and Namashi have both worked as actors in Hindi films.

Mithun Chakraborty has been married to Yogeeta Bali since 1979, and the marriage has lasted more than four decades. Before this he was briefly married to Helena Luke. During the 1980s he was reportedly in a relationship with actress Sridevi, with whom he starred in several films; neither confirmed the details publicly and Mithun remained married to Yogeeta Bali throughout. He has generally kept his family life private.

Chakraborty made his film debut with Mrinal Sen's Mrigayaa (1976), winning the National Film Award for Best Actor on his first outing. He spent the late 1970s building a foothold in both Bengali and Hindi cinema, with the Bengali film Nadi Theke Sagar among his early successes.

The 1982 musical Disco Dancer made him a household name and an unlikely international star, drawing enormous audiences in the Soviet Union and China. Through the 1980s and early 1990s he was one of Hindi cinema's busiest leading men, appearing in a large number of films each year and earning a place in the Limca Book of Records for the sheer volume of his output.

He won further National Film Awards for the Bengali film Tahader Katha (1992) and, as Best Supporting Actor, for Swami Vivekananda (1998). In later years he moved into strong supporting parts in films such as Agneepath (1990), Guru (2007), Golmaal 3 (2010), Oh My God! (2012) and The Kashmir Files (2022).

He conceived and mentored the dance reality show Dance India Dance and appeared as its Grandmaster. He served as a Rajya Sabha member from 2014 to 2016 on a Trinamool Congress nomination, and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2021.

Mithun Chakraborty is among Indian cinema's wealthiest veteran stars, with income from a five-decade film career, television, and business interests including the Monarch Group in hospitality and education. His net worth has been reported by third-party outlets at around US$40 million; this figure is an estimate and has not been officially confirmed by the actor.
