Haq
Official Trailer
Storyline
Set against India in the 1970s and 80s, Haq follows Shazia Bano, whose husband Abbas leaves her for a second marriage and refuses to pay adequate maintenance. Denied her due, Shazia takes her fight to court, and what begins as one woman’s claim for support grows into a case that climbs all the way to the Supreme Court. Her pursuit of justice forces a nationwide reckoning over the balance between religious personal law and constitutional rights, culminating in a judgment whose reverberations reached far beyond her own life.
Production
Haq was directed by Suparn Verma from a screenplay by Reshu Nath, drawing on the real Shah Bano case as chronicled in Jigna Vora’s book. It was produced by Vineet Jain, Vishal Gurnani, Juhi Parekh Mehta, Harman Baweja and Vicky Jain under the Junglee Pictures, Insomnia Films and Baweja Studios banners. The film was photographed by Pratham Mehta and edited by Ninad Khanolkar, with a runtime of about 136 minutes. Its subject drew pre-release legal scrutiny over the portrayal of the case.
Music
The songs were composed by Vishal Mishra, with the background score by Sandeep Chowta, complementing the film’s period setting and its restrained, drama-forward tone.
Reception
Haq released theatrically on 7 November 2025 and grossed around ₹28.68 crore. Critics responded positively, praising the lead performances and the film’s mature handling of a contentious subject, though a few found it uneven. It later found a wider audience on Netflix from 2 January 2026, topping the platform’s India charts.
