The Royals

The Royals centres on a modern Indian royal family whose grand lifestyle now far outstrips its bank balance. When the family’s reluctant, polo-loving heir Aviraaj Singh crosses paths with Sophia Kanmani Shekhar, a sharp hospitality entrepreneur, the two hatch a plan to turn the crumbling ancestral palace into a high-end resort. As tradition collides with business ambition — and sparks fly between the mismatched pair — the family must weigh pride against survival. The result is a glossy comedy of manners set against palace corridors and old-money intrigue.

The Royals was created by Rangita Pritish Nandy and Ishita Pritish Nandy under the Pritish Nandy Communications banner, directed by Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana, and written by Neha Veena Sharma. Made for Netflix, the series leans heavily on lavish costumes and production design to build its world of contemporary Indian royalty. Following its premiere, it was renewed for a second season.

The series pairs its opulent visuals with a contemporary Hindi soundtrack and score that match its glossy, upbeat romantic-comedy tone.

The Royals premiered on Netflix on 9 May 2025 and drew mixed reviews. Critics praised the performances of Ishaan Khatter, Vihaan Samat and Sakshi Tanwar along with the costumes and production design, while faulting the lead pairing’s chemistry, the direction and a storyline felt to lack emotional depth. Despite the reception, Netflix renewed the show for a second season.
