Sarfira
Official Trailer
Plot
Vir Mhatre grows up watching his father humiliated for being unable to reach his dying grandfather in time because air travel is a luxury reserved for the rich. That wound becomes a lifelong mission: to build an airline the common man can afford. After a stint in the Air Force, Vir pours everything into launching a no-frills carrier, clashing repeatedly with established tycoon Paresh Goswami, who controls the skies and is determined to crush any low-cost rival. Vir's wife Rani — who builds her own bakery empire from scratch — anchors him through bankruptcies, betrayals and personal loss. The film charts his bruising, decade-long fight against monopolies, regulators and his own pride to finally put the first ticket in an ordinary passenger's hand.
Production
Sarfira is the official Hindi remake of the 2020 Tamil hit Soorarai Pottru, with Sudha Kongara returning to direct her own story — both films are loosely inspired by Air Deccan founder Captain G.R. Gopinath's memoir Simply Fly. Akshay Kumar leads as Vir Mhatre, with Radhika Madan as Rani and Paresh Rawal as the antagonist tycoon. The music is composed by G.V. Prakash Kumar. It was produced by Akshay Kumar's Cape of Good Films alongside Suriya's 2D Entertainment and Abundantia Entertainment, and released in theatres on 12 July 2024.
Critical Reception
Critics largely praised Sarfira's emotional core and Akshay Kumar's restrained, against-type performance, with many singling out Radhika Madan and Paresh Rawal's supporting turns. Reviewers noted the film stays faithful to Soorarai Pottru and questioned the need for a near-identical remake, while still finding the underdog story rousing. Despite warm word of mouth, the film had a muted theatrical run before finding a wider audience on streaming.
Where to Watch
